Abstract:

Miniemulsion polymerization is one of heterogeneous polymerization method that can be effectively used to synthesis of various novel organic-inorganic nanocomposite particles. This method can provide opportunity of good incorporation between the polymer and inorganic phases in the formed submicrometer-sized particles. In this article, we report preparation polystyrene/silica nanocomposite particles via miniemulsion polymerization of styrene (St). Synthesis of the nanocomposite particles were performed using γ-methacryloxyprop yltrimethoxysilane (MPS) which perform compatibility of silica and the polymer phase by covalent interactions. Morphology, particle size, spectroscopic characteristics and thermal properties of resulted nanocomposite particles were studied. TEM study showed a raspberry like morphology for the nanocomposite particles. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of polystyrene and silica with MPS compatibilizer in the structure of the nanocomposite. Thermogravimetric analysis and Differential scanning calorimetry studies showed that the incorporation of silica in polymer matrix results variation in thermal stability and glass transition temperature of nanocomposite particles relative to that of the polymer without silica in it.

Synthesis of asymmetric inorganic/polymer nanocomposite particles via localized substrate surface modification and miniemulsion polymerization.

Asymmetric nanocomposite particle pairs of polystyrene and silica were prepared via one-step miniemulsion polymerization for the first time. The transmission electron microscopy images showed that these nanocomposite particle pairs were monodisperse and highly asymmetric in morphology. The key to obtaining the asymmetric nanocomposite particle pairs was the combination of miniemulsion polymeriz...

Synthesis and applications of MANs/poly(MMA-co-BA) nanocomposite latex by miniemulsion polymerization

We have synthesized core-shell structured 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) functionalized antimony-doped tin oxide nanoparticles (MANs)-poly(methyl methacrylate-co-butyl acrylate) (PMMA-co-BA, PMB) nanocomposite latex particles via miniemulsion polymerization method. Polymerizable anionic surfactant DNS-86 (allyloxy polyoxyethylene(10) nonyl ammonium sulfate) was first introduced to s...

Synthesis and Characterization of ‎Carboxymethyl Cellulose/Polystyrene ‎Core-Shell Nanoparticles by Miniemulsion ‎Polymerization

The first stage to have access to a reservoir is the drilling operation. The proper development of this operation plays a major role in increasing productivity. It must be pointed out that the drilling fluid (mud) is pivotal in achieving this objective. Among these fluids, water-based fluids are the most common ones, which have been utilized to drill approximately 80% of all wells and are m...

Continuous Miniemulsion Polymerization

Most miniemulsion polymerizations are carried out in batch reactors. However, continuous reactors or continuous reactor trains can provide a high level of consistency when operated at steady state. In this feature article, progress in continuous miniemulsion polymerization will be reviewed. Special attention will be given to issues of monomer diffusion and secondary nucleation. A large portion ...
